📦 Best Box Types

  • Double-wall corrugated — standard for most items
  • Small (1.5 cu ft) — books, toys, heavy memorabilia
  • Medium (3 cu ft) — clothing, decor, kitchenware
  • Dish pack / barrel — fragile decor, figurines
  • Wardrobe box — clothes on hangers
  • Plastic bins (locking) — photos, documents, irreplaceable items

🌡️ Container Survival

  • Add silica gel packs to boxes with photos, leather, electronics
  • Use bubble wrap + packing paper (not newspaper — ink transfers)
  • Fill empty space with crumpled paper to prevent shifting
  • Seal all seams with quality packing tape (3 strips minimum)
  • Never pack liquids, aerosols, or plants (US Customs)
  • Wrap box opening in plastic film before taping — moisture barrier

🏷️ Labeling System

  • Label all 4 sides + top of every box
  • Include: Box #, Room, Priority on every label
  • Use colored tape per room — fast visual ID at the container
  • Write "THIS SIDE UP" and "FRAGILE" clearly
  • Take a photo of open box before sealing
  • Load P1 boxes last so they come off first

🛃 US Customs CBP

  • File CBP Form 3299 — Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles
  • Items owned 1+ year enter duty-free
  • Use fair market value of used items (not replacement cost)
  • Sentimental/used personal items: generally duty-free
  • New items with tags may be taxed — keep receipts
  • Use the Customs tab to generate your declaration
